Why We Choose a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) Battery for Evoke

A recent and interesting episode of Radiolab called: Why Batteries Suck featured the ins and outs of battery technology.

The episode covers the advancement of battery technology across various fields. If everything in the world is becoming faster, smaller and cheaper, the question arises: Why does progress in the world of batteries move so slow? The podcast talks mostly about electric cars and solar energy storage, but battery technology is limiting progress in personal vaporizers as well.

For our flagship Evoke vaporizer, we chose the Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery for 3 key advantages:

SAFETY FIRST

When choosing our battery, safety was the #1 priority. While this may seem far-fetched, there have been many, many documented incidents f the lithium batteries in smart phones exploding, for example in this recent PC Mag article. Even Boeing has recently been struggling with batteries catching fire mid-flight.  This is so common, in fact, that the AndroidPit released an article late last year with tips and tricks to prevent phone batteries from exploding. 

Since vaporizers place high demands on relatively large batteries and are used constantly in close proximity to a user’s face, we were zealous in seeking out a battery that didn’t explode.

MAXIMIZING UTILITY

Lithium Iron Phosphate is also advantageous because it provides more constant and consistent power over its discharge cycle and its life. This has a number of benefits including longer life span (total number of re-charges) and better temperature regulation.

In our induction system, total energy is the most important criterion. We have a circuit in the Evoke device that boosts the voltage and so we don’t mind the lower battery voltage. It is true that Lithium Ion batteries have a higher energy density at the beginning of their lives but this drops below that of our Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries over time.

Our research concluded that Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries provided the best mix of safety and energy. We are confident that these batteries will provide our customers with the safest, most efficient, and highest quality vapor from any vaporizer battery currently available.
